Multi Model Agnostic Geometry: MMAG by Steve Fly Agaric 23

His philosophy was one of multiple model agnosticism - not just simply about the existence of God but agnosticism about everything. With MMA, there is no point getting hung up on the models themselves because that’s all they are – models.—John Higgs, KLF. pg. 258.

Multi Model Agnostic Geometry.

by Steve Fly

To make a joint between the open feeling of awe, with a little melancholy doubt, seems to me a healthy mixture for getting by in 2014 without totally loosing your wig. As the author ages, he develops a critical doubting faculty too, equally.

I sit here ready to write something about sacred geometry, confronted with the wallpaper of doubt all over my room, can the author clearly express whatever is on his mind to share now? Now doubts double, doubts about the internal logic and consistency of the writing and the ideas, doubts on the scientific interpretation of the signs and symbols invoked, the rational logic interplay, or frigid lack of it, the question of how on earth to deal with contradictions, both grammatical and personal? I do not wish to tell you what to think, or to collapse your state vector regarding whichever bunch of signs and symbols you use to employ. Bill Drummond said: 'embrace the contradictions' best advice when you think about it.

However, the crux of my investigation into agnostic geometry, remember, revolves around having a higher and broader skepticism for blind truth. Truth in the singular, single sight and Newtons sleep and all that, with a particular eye/nose/ear for pulling buzz words like 'divinity', 'holy' and 'Gods' into a reasonable framework of logic. I will argue, on the one mitten that as soon as God or the divine, or the holy turn up, some but not all rationality departs. Where does it go, i don't know, maybe into the null void of the meaningless and indeterminate. On the other mitten, perhaps the Gods never left us, if we want them they are right here now, everywhere in potential spacetime, awaiting some creative mind to make contact?

Sacred geometry, at least on the surface, appears to me to use arbitrarily assigned holiness to differentiate sacred geometry from a godless, non-sacred geometry. After all, it follows that sacred geometry would be the most precise, correct and self consistent geometry, the bleeding edge of geometry. The edge, if anywhere seems to me to be where we might find sacred geometry, closer to the cutting edge of Gods garage.?

While recently combing the inter webs for ideas, novel innovations in technology and the language used to describe such innovations, I do not often come across the use of terms such as sacred, spiritual and holy, or if I do they often display what I perceive to be lacking in basic scientific method. A handful dare to cross academic boundaries, while they retain a methodological integrity and sense, often due to a relatively simple linguistic hygiene practice, so floss your stinky Aristotelian tongue. A reminder: what you are reading is the product of a singular human being amongst billions, and any truth hauled in by your meat puppet will shortly be cast back out to the depths again. Please go dig on RAW, Dr Timothy Leary, Dr John Lilly, Bucky Fuller and Aleister Crowley for some wicked examples, great fishing spots and techniques.

This process, to me, reflects both the realm of Quantum Mechanics and the process of Taoism, and has to do with the forces of Yin-Yang, each containing the seed of its opposite. When looking into order chaos emerges, and when studying chaos, order emerges, as if the principle around the concept of the resolution of opposites gets at the unknowable and thoroughly unpredictable nature of things, like the light particle/light wave duality, and the damn missing plane. RAW brilliantly synthesized a collection of historical characters who were all touched by this principle in different ways, from the early great Hermeticists Giordano Bruno and Giambattista Vico, to James Joyce, Carl Jung, Claude Shannon and Marshall McLuhan, in the 20th century. This resolution of opposites, inherent in the principles of these innovators maybe a clue to RAWs question concerning what the above people and their innovations have in common with Internet?

The nature of life, not least a process important to any search for the answer to the age old question about meaning and life. As Alfred Korzybski said: “everything you say it is, it isnt”I feel swept over to the point where I try to distinguish between good agnostic geometry and good sacred geometry, and demonstrate how non-sacred geometry can be equally, if not a tad more holy that its sacred sibling. If you can take my holyometer, or proposed measurement of the divine without laughing out loud?

As far as I can see Buckminster Fuller was a agnostic geometry innovator, and perhaps his quote ‘God is a verb’ can stand as testament, next to the thousands of Geodesic domes across the planet. He sided with the scientific community, yet also managed to allow space in his methods for consciousness, and for intuitive mind to find solutions to specific problems when they arise, that's what mind does, it solves problems using the whole of human experience and technology together, if it can override the animal instinct to fight and shop at Tesco supermarket. And so often requires a boot in the arse - a war or a global crisis, an excuse to implement the solutions, or perhaps more urgently find a new way of thinking about the problems.

Buck exemplified techno-optimism at its most comprehensive, and demonstrated through design science innovation what religiously inclined people might refer to as miracles, or magic. Bucky crafted poetry too and developed into a distinguished linguist, creating a rag bag of new terms and often compound words, such a Dymaxion [Dynamic Maximum Tension] which presents evidence to show that he did not refuse to acknowledge that language and words are equally charged technologies that may bring about positive change both in the user of the language and within the environment. As Benjamin Lee Whorf once exclaimed: ‘a transformation in language, can lead to a transformation in the cosmos’.

Together with his writing and equations and theory, Bucky performed by example, making the solutions real tangible things, houses, cars, maps. Personally speaking, if any religious leader also happened to have made numerous useful, practical contributions to science I would be quick to listen and learn. Not to deny that Dzogchen Buddhism, for example, behaves as a practical psychological system on a par with the scientific method, featuring rigorous experimental conditions, attention to the instruments used (the mind) taking careful notes, and staying awake to the possible hidden variables. (also for more on this see Carl Jung, James Joyce, Giambattista Vico, Wolfgang Pauli, founding principles of Taoism and founding principles of Quantum Mechanics)

Although many people find satisfaction, enjoyment and a kind of enlightenment through adopting rather bizarre ideas about specific kinds of geometry, usually what is more appealing to the eye, you do not find many joining the church of special relativity and building an alternative spiritual movement on the principles of Einstein. But why not? How can any Scientology disciple sleep at night knowing the they worship L. Ron Hubbard and his ideas, when characters like Einstein and Bucky Fuller demonstrate a much more solid kind of scientific knowledge system, and in Bucky’s case with dozens of practical innovations that obviously help individuals, communities and planetary systems co-evolve together. Not just a psychological strategy for self-discovery combined with the usual trappings and flights of fantasy associated with institutionalized religious doctrine.

In the some sense then, the sacred scripture, or symbol system of science is mathematics. A meta programming tool-kit, that maybe allow for an infinite variety of problem solving equations, based on a decentralized system where anybody who can calculate, holds the keys to understanding. Organized religion, and Scientology, and a lot of sacred geometry schools, on the other hand use scripture as scripture. I mean to say, the system is centralized and controlled due to the fact that there is a symbol system deemed to be the only true symbol system, and very very special, or Sacred due to it coming from a very special or Holy individual. See Jesus, Mohammad, Buddha, L. Ron Hubbard.

Mathematics is open source friendly and loves new data, and updating, like good science. On the contrary, organized religion and Divinely guided individuals want you to only concentrate on a controlled slice of scripture, and develop a new centralized control system. A new father figure, a new boss, usually accompanied by a congregation of invisible beings, often, interestingly reflecting the culture that manufactured them: angels, demons, space aliens, fairies, critters.

On the bright side, like Alan Moore states ‘the gods exists in our minds where they are real beyond refute’ but the major difference here is that Alan, unlike the Pope, may contact hundreds of Gods and Goddesses, perhaps thousands in all forms, a great pantheon of Gods of all sorts. The Catholic Pope, however, along with most other religious leaders, seems stuck worshiping just one God, usually with a big dick, one scripture, and often just one way. At least any serious occultist or magician will have at some point encountered the warnings and advice on believing anything they encounter or contact, a lifelong motif throughout the works of RAW. ‘you are the master who makes grass green’

The one place that Gods unarguably exist is in our minds where they are real beyond refute, in all their grandeur and monstrosity.—Alan Moore as William Gull, From Hell.

I find the idea that before the constraints and/or expansive opportunities emerged in human culture due to the lack of a universal symbol system adequately developed, humans lived in a totally different universe, a world without words. Can you imagine that? Like the principle that you cannot find or have the condition of dyslexia in a non-alphabetical culture! the symbol system you use can modify your entire cosmos for better or worse, dependent on which side of the fence you may graze.

On one side the traps and untruths forwarded by Aristotelian --dualistic systems--lead to disharmony in the human physiological system, and currently, amplified by the military-industrial-corporate-media complex, billions humans are at unnecessarily high risks of contracting disease, starting in the mind and manifesting within the body. Take note of the excessive use of dualistic, closed-minded religious terminology in pop culture and politics. This idea is somewhat along the lines of the psycho-physiological ideas put forward by Wilhelm Reich in ‘The Mass Psychology of Fascism’ and Alfred Korzybski in ‘Science and Sanity’, both brought to my attention once again, by our man Robert Anton Wilson, Read him. RAW wrote about all this much better than the present author, and more than 50 years ago. Get digging.

On the other side, symbol systems used to express multi valued logic, of anything more than two change the game, introduce new ways to connect and co-operate. To not have access to these important and helpful symbol systems would throw any culture into a new paradigm shift, literally unimaginable. The invention of programmable computer software code, and advancements in A.I. systems relate to multi-valued probabilities, decentralized field approaches, reasoning, and at the same time they generally avoid religious jargon. Although, ‘spiritual machine’ is a term sometimes used to get a conversation going about A.I. A more meaningful term, in the current context is consciousness, the final frontier? I’ll leave that for another post.

To conclude, perhaps at this point it is wise to take a kind of pan-psychist approach and say that yes, everything is sacred, sentient and conscious, in a tiny tiny degree, in part due to it being under our light of consciousness. But I think that to isolate one particular model, no matter how true it seems to you, leads to trouble down the road, and many charlatans out there are looking for that trouble specifically, ways to shine light on some things and eclipse others, without letting anybody know about all that other stuff in potential, or what is not yet tuned in. Any word used to denote extra special qualities in a thing, that are typically unquantifiable, such as ‘Sacred’ ‘Holy’ ‘Divine’ ‘Royal’ ‘Righteous’ work as a distraction and aversion from the noble goal of balancing the language, or symbol systems used…with the equation of life, the calculations and division turned into knowledge.

Art and Magick seem interchangeable terms to me too, as they do to Alan Moore if I can be so bold as to point at him and simply and say: what he do. And furthermore, what he has demonstrated without a shadow of a bats wing of a doubt, he has understood and mastered both realms with a rare and equal balance. Not dogmatic science and not dogmatic religion, but willing to investigate both, and giving examples of multi-model agnosticism. deployed successfully with the aid of advanced art and magick. Yes mate.

I bring up Moore here as an important individual, and atruly great Englishman, who practices a delicate blend of art-magick-geometry, in some sense, in the best sense reaching back to the Hermetic scientists and mystics of the Renaissance period. He presents living evidence that--based on the above theory somewhat aimed at debunking the use of terms like sacred, divine, holy, as distinguished from the probabilistic language used in good scientific method—a middle way exists, a magickal way, that preserves the wonder and mystery of consciousness and creative imagination and the manifestation of symbols signs and scripture, yet, at the same time can apply disciplined scientific method. For example taking strict notes while utilizing the 'operationalist language' of defining the instruments used, the conditions of the experiments, and the important practice of strengthening contradicting criticism and arguments, keeping change constant with a healthy flexible process of updating based on the latest information.

In the case of exciting new Geometry the amplituhedron fits that description for me, another exciting new development in geometry that can be viewed as being an extension of Buckminster Fuller innovations. such as synergetics together with the continued growth of Fullerenes, of which I think Carbon 60 takes the crown of creation and deserves very special attention and study.

The magical thinking of the mind fails, more often than not, when it tries to move beyond the immaterial and affect the material world. Likewise, objective materialism has proved to be a fat lot of good at explaining or predicting the mental worlds we inhabit. Once we are aware of those limits, the idea that these two models are incompatible falls away. Using multi-model agnosticism, we no longer have to take sides and nail our colours to one or the other.”—John Higgs, The KLF, Chaos, Magic, and the band who burned a million pounds.

Sacred means revered due to association with holiness. Holiness, or sanctity, is in general the state of being holy (perceived by religious individuals as associated with divinity) or sacred (considered worthy of spiritual respect or devotion; or inspiring awe or reverence among believers)-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred

“Geometry (Ancient Greek: γεωμετρία; geo- "earth", -metron "measurement") is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space.-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geometry

TTOTT WHEELS GO AROUNDAROTA

TTOTT WHEELS GO AROUNDAROTA

TTOTT WHEELS GO AROUNDAROTA

BALANCING THE EQUATIONS WITH TRIADS.

I view a part of my task in setting up a table of ttott correspondences as providing examples of how the tables can be used to create various effects. Both as study guides into historical, biographical work and as imagination guides into the tale of the tribe, and the new translations.

The triangular structure enables opposing characteristics of mildness and severity a point of resolution and of synthesis, a middle path that may recycle the energies back and around and in so doing balance the opposing forces. The general idea of dividing 30 characters into 10 sets of triangulated groups of three characters, for example, may provide a working model for a rough structure, as would 15 sets of waltzing duo's of opposing forces or a 'coincidance of contraries' as Joyce put it in Finnegans Wake.

GEODESICS

I have developed number systems for working out the new maps, due to the possibility of multi-dimensional models at a latter stage of the project, whereby objects containing various symbols and images can be folded and enfolded. I have already experimented with a TTOTT Dodecahedron of 20 sides and 12 vertices, and in principle, the numbers 30, 60, 90,120 and 150 all render symmetrical objects upon which information may be presented, here I pay tribute to Buckminster Fuller, and Giordano Bruno.

THE TALLY OF THE TRIBE.

The set of 5 wheels I have designed each have 30 'nodes' on their belt of concentric rings. I made them by choosing 5 major categories: Tailors, Theolo, Texts, Teachings, Totems (Human Beings, Spirits, Texts, Principles, Objects).

I have chose to recycle 'T' words and keep a running TTOTT structure to each heading and category I make. The TTOTT logo features four 'T's tilted to create a four way symmetry (+) with a circle placed central. If you pretend to say the word 'T' you'll notice your tongue gets right up on your teeth, and if you make a repeated 'T' sound you may notice that you sound a little like a Hi-Hat cymbal, and, that you can repeat the letter 'T' faster and with more control than possibly any other letter in the English Alphabet? This will have some correspondence to the spoken word and spoken drum components to the class, but also keep the original TTOTT (the tale of the tribe) intact.

Giordano Bruno used the number 30 often when constructing his wheels and wheels within wheels. Although unlike Bruno, my belts are so far only attenuated to the TTOTT matter, and simply borrow the use of the number 30 and the idea of putting lists of things on concentric rings, 5 in total, producing 150 nodes, or images in Bruno's model, that I should add seems incredibly more complex and refined than my wheels. Reading Bruno recently led me to revisit the idea of having 30 things on revolving tables, something I used to anchor some themes in an early edition of my book: World Piss: 30 seals and the spore of the words.

All the characters that follow Bruno chronologically can appear on the wheels that he inspired, together with Giambattista Vico, (another philosopher of the revolutionary hermetic renaissance tradition), the tribal characters can ride the wheel, the turning tables of correspondences, and so unify in that movement, that ever-changing sensibility and decentralized and rotational wisdom. A revolutionary force.

CONNECTING CYCLES AND CIRCUITS

The tale of the tribe must be a connected network, otherwise it is useless. A new team of nodal points, shared swarms that link together. The goal of a hologramic network, a poem, novel, screenplay, album, performing overlapping functions, working together.

The triple spiral symbolizes the rotational and spiral nature of the connected works of Dr. Robert Anton Wilson, the triad or delta that symbolizes femininity and the triple goddess. Vico and Joyce and Nietzsche feed off the spiraling principles of recorsi. Giordano Bruno and his "Memory Wheels" plus Giambattista Vico and his "Cycles of Ages", Frederich Nietzsche and the "Eternal Return", Ernest Fenollosa and the omni-directional radiance of "Chinese Symbolism", William Butler Yeats and his dynamic "Gyres" and "Unity of Being" and 'Symbolism', Ezra Pound and his "Revolutionary Calendar" and 'Ideogramic method of juxtaposition', James Joyce and his spiral powered "coincidance of contraries & resolution of opposites", Buckminster Fuller and the moving "Synergistic" principles. Meanwhile Alfred Korzybski and his "General Semantics", Marshall McLuhan and his "Global Village Tribes", Orson Welles and his "Neurological Cinematic Relativity", Claude Shannon and "Information Theory" and other recurring geniuses and their additional contributions to humanity intersect with connecting threads represented by Dr. Wilson. In my opionion at their most potent when writing on Joyce: the mother-load of compressed hermetic wisdom.

THE TURNING OF THE TRIBE

The new maps and seals I present are a work in progress and as far as I know a unique way of processing the information, and potentially a relatively simple and sharable method for others to conduct similar research.

I would like to present a kind of Top Trumps challenge to create an equally revolutionary belt of innovative thinkers, or simply use any combination of belts on any grouping of things that you may wish, make it new! Bio-seasonal, calendrical, astrological and cosmological belts for example, may add many useful functions, the possibilities are literally endless with this, but I have chose to stack and pack a krewe that I believe represent the tale of the tribe as defined by Dr. Wilson, quite a bunch', to perhaps provide a new platform for collaborative investigations, and new interpretations. Nodes or units of distilled cultural inheritance.

SPS is for Saul Paul Sirag (Interview with fly agaric23)

When I recorded this interiew in 2000 A.D. on minidisc recorder I had no way to transcribe and upload the results, and there was no wikipedia to enhance the wisdom of Saul. Big thanks to Jack Sarfatti, please spend a moment at his new website:
http://www.stardrive.org/

FLY interviews Saul Paul Sirag:

FLY: Robert Anton Wilson?

SAUL: Yeah, i first introduced him to Jack,

SAUL: Yeah, well he learned about this Bell's theorem stuff from Jack and me, i introduced Jack to Wilson, that was when he was living in Berkeley.

FLY: Oh, the trick top hat

SAUL: what?

SAUL: The trick top hat', oh, yeah, the trick top hat, yeah that’s the next one i think, and the third one is called 'homing pigeons', trick top hat is the one that has references to both Jack and Me as coming up with futuristic kind of physics that changes things drastically and so on.

FLY: That’s interesting as John Lilly just recently spoke about the...erm...form of law

SAUL: Laws of form?

FLY: yeah, and the trick top hat relates to that somehow?

SAUL: I'm very interested in the Laws of form also, yeah he talks about it in both his fiction and he has written a lot of non-fiction too of course, and maybe more none-fiction than fiction actually, although, you know he's one of these people that mixes the two together a lot, kind of like Borges' the Argentinean writer, well, B draws a fine line between lit. criticism that is not fiction and the fiction that he's criticizing, B's criticism is so speculative and interesting that it reads almost as fiction, you know.

FLY: I like the idea of exploring our unreality's. At the back of the book "Secret Chamber by Robert Bauval" there's an appendix in which the author mentions Wilhelm Reich and something he calls Cosmic ambience. Terence Mckenna is quoted at length, talk of probing into unreality's, but now were realizing that's our reality too.

SAUL: One of the most important pieces of criticism that's really fascinating, and it's about that famous British poet - William Taylor Coleridge - and you see what's interesting about that poem is that Coleridge calls it a - fragment of a poem - the reason he calls it a fragment is that he actually dreamt' the whole poem, he woke up and just started writing it down, but he got the first part of it written down, and a visiter came and visited, and he forgot the rest of it, so he calls it a fragment of a poem anyway, its a beautiful poem all by itself, but here's the weird thing that Borges points out - there really was a Khan who was a builder - and he was the grandson of Genghis Khan; who was just a conquerer, but Kubilai Kahn was a builder. What Coleridge never knew is that Kubilai Kahn really did order a pleasure dome to be built, and that was enough, but what wasn't known in Cooleridge's time is that it itself was an incomplete building, and that was discovered by archeologists after Cooleridge's time, eh, so what Borges says is there's a kind of archetype, a vast archetype thats trying to get in through our reality, the first time its comes in the form of a building Kubilai Kahn wants to build, and for some reason its not completed, and the second time it takes the form of a poem about Kubilai Kahn's building, and that's incomplete too, because of this guy who walks in and disturbs his memory of the dream. So then Borges speculates that it will try to come in a third time, and he thinks that the form will be different, in some way. My feeling about that is that the form, having my own prejudices about forms, is that the form is what Mathematicians have discovered, a beautiful set of structures, they call it the Coxeter graphs, named after the canadian H. S. M. Coxeter, who's still alive in his 90's still doing math very accurately, and he invented these graphs in the 1930's to classify hyper-dimensional crystal structures, well that already sounds like Kubilai Kahn and Coleridge - and then in the 40's totally independent of Coxeter'mathematicians work because it was in a totally different part of mathematics, a Russian mathematician named Dinken, invented the same set of graphs to classify very different kind mathematical objects, something called; lie algebras and lie groups. Then in the 60's a french mathematician called Rene' Thom invented a whole new field of mathematics called Catastrophe theory, which deals with dynamic systems that can undergo drastic changes due to a very small change in the parameters that they are dependent on, thus the word catastrophe, but catastrophe is to be taken in a neutral sense, that is to say a lot of catastrophes are good.

In fact what RT was trying to model was the changes that living systems go through, he wanted a mathematics to deal with living systems, especially development and growth and so on; which is very difficult to deal with mathematically.

Well then a Russian mathematician named V.I Arnold looked at Rene Thom's work and said Thom just delt' with a lower, small set, 7 of them in turned out, of catastrophe structures, but actually there is an infinite series and they are classified by these same graphs, so then of course the obvious idea that Arnold had was that the must be a whole bunch of other mathematical objects that can be brought into this classification scheme and so he set that up basically as a program for his students and himself to work on over the years and a lot of other mathematicians have been involved in this. And it has the feel of an archeological dig like their digging up this vast.... see because, Here's why, its because all these mathematical objects are related to each other by way of these graphs, the graphs form a kind of bridge between different types of mathematical objects, that’s a very powerful thing to be able to do in mathematics because what's very difficult to see with one type of math object and if you have a bridge between the two and you can switch back and forth and get a much broader and much more accurate feel for what's going on.

And so the idea now is that the mathematicians are wondering what the vast underlying object is that the whole set of graphs ultimately refers to and that object is this archeological structure in some sense, and its being dug up, its not a ruin its not something that’s incomplete because its mathematical, its - gotta’ be whole - so to speak. And a very interesting thing from the point of view of science is that all the math objects that have been brought into the classification scheme with these Coxeter graphs are of great use and interest in physics. In fact especially in unified field theory type physics, that’s cutting edge now, like string theory, uses all these kinds of objects usually without the physicist realizing that they're grabbing objects that are related to each other by way of these graphs, because for the most part they don't know about the history of these discoveries and that it’s kind of ongoing, sort of at the cutting edge of mathematics, a kind of unification in mathematics concurrently with a unification of the forces of physics, and these two programs are intimately interrelated, and so what i think is that this vast underlying object that underlies all these graphs, is simply reality - reality in all its forms - you know.

A physicist is going to want to call it physics, because they want to bring everything into the physics program, someone else might want to call it something else, like life or something , it has the feeling of a living breathing creature, its a bit like Phil Dick's idea of VALIS: Vast Active Living Intelligence System, and yeah, ironically he claimed that the definition is in some Soviet encyclopedia of some distant year, and of course the soviet Union is long gone, but still the idea of VALIS is still valid i feel.

FLY: valid VALIS!

SAUL: Laughs.

FLY: I’m also interested in the parable between the yang-mills field theory and the work of the mathematician Ramanujan.

SAUL: Yeah, oh yeah, see that’s related to this ADE stuff too. It all is. Yang-mills fields was first a generalization of the electromagnetic field, the em field is mathematisized in a sense, by a simple group which is a circle called U1, a unitary one group, and its a communicative group, in other words the way in which you rotate a circle does not matter, 30 degrees plus 60 degrees equals 60 plus 30 degrees, so it doesn't matter, and that;s a communicative group, and in the language we use today we say thats the gauge group of electromagnetism.

But what Yang and Mills did back in the 1950's, 54 i think was the year, generalized the group into a bigger group that deals with rotations ultimately rot' in a 3d space, and thats the gauge group; they were trying to model the strong force, but it turned out to be the right group for the weak force, then in the 60' there was the unification of the st and weak force by simply putting U1 and SU2 together as a bigger gauge group, work by Weinberg, Salem and Glashow, and this had certain experimental implications, like the existence of certain particles that were then found which verify the theory, but in fact there are still parts of the theory we are still trying to verify, like the Higgs particle, which hasn't been found yet, and thats part of the theory, and we think that eventually it will be found, but generally these gauge groups are groups that are classified by the ADE groups, now SU actually is an ADE classification, simply the very first rung on the ladder so to speak, in order to bring in the other forces like the strong for force they have to go to a larger gauge group, put all 3 forces together, weak the strong and the electromagnetic force, they had to go to SU5, which is a 3 dim group, that work was done in 74 i guess, by Glashow and Geogee, the same Glashow that did the work on electro-weak theory.

But then in order to bring in gravity which is a lot harder to do because gravity entails Einstein's theory of general relativity which is so different from Quantum mechanics, these other forces are modelled by way of the rules of general relativity, which are very different, almost opposite from the rules of Quantum Mechanics, so it’s very hard to put these theories together; to assume sub theories, or some bigger theories. But thats been done now with superstring theory. Yeah, since 1984 superstring theory has been proven to be a viable consistent quantum gravity theory, and thats what started a sort of bandwagon effect in physics and when lots of young physicists got interested in studying strings.

But the gauge groups involves in string theory are huge groups, like E8 x E8. There are 3 groups, which is interesting, an infinite A's, An Infinite D's and then only 3 E's, E6 E7 and E8, the dimensionality is huge. E6, is a 78 dimensional group, E7 is a 133 dimensional group and E8 is a 240 dimensional group, and they use 2 copies of it. They have an E8 x E8 version of superstring theory, they have 496 dimensional group actually, and the E8 x E8 gives you 16 very special dimensions which they use to interpolate between the 26 dimensional superstring theory and the 10 dimensional theory in a very clever way. And all this is an out-growth of what you mentioned - the yang-mills theory of 1954 - it’s an out-growth of other developments too, but that was a key development in 1954 and i just wanted to plug that in and see how that fits into the ADE scheme itself, you see?

FLY: I see a parallel between the superstrings and the strings on an instrument

SAUL: Yeah, well it is like strings on an instrument in this sense, that the harmonics, what we call vibrational states, quantized vibrational States are exactly harmonics, auk, and string harmonics are what we used to call particle states, OK, that’s how string theory corresponds to particles, and the way the correspondence works is by way of the gauge groups that are classified by these ADE graphs so the ultimate tool is simply these graphs, which go way back into the 30's to Coxeter's work, not knowing the way these things were be used in the future but he really started something there and Dinken in Russia you know, the same graphs, classifying "Lie algebras which are the algebras of the gauge groups as we use them in physics now and he had no idea that development was going to happen, he was a pure mathematician not a physicist, even physicists in the 40's should not foresee that development.

And you mentioned RAM earlier, and some of the more esoteric discoveries of RAM are actually very fundamental parts of super string theory and special membrane theory, and so people thought of RAM's work as not only been rather fantastic of course, its amazing he came up with those identities, allot of his work involved saying "this is equal to that, and the two things are so deferent that, you know, you might never in a thousand years think that was true, they're still working on proving RAM's ideas, and a lot of people are working on that now in mathematics. But a lot of his ideas are being brought into physics by Super-string theory funnily enough.

FLY: One of the things i found really interesting in the work of Buckminster Fuller was the isotropic vector, (Vector equilibrium you mean?) yeah... i'm looking for relationships between the superstrings and Bucky's work...

SAUL: The vector equalibrium is an object that has 12 vertices, ok, and actually that object, is one of these crystallographic objects, in fact that crystallographic object exists exactly in what i call the reflection space, or you could call it a crystallographic space of the SU(4) group. OK, and in fact of course; those 12 vertices actually correspond to what we call; eigen values of the S4 group which correspond to what we call the gauge particles, or the force particles. You see; there's two types groups of particles in quantum theory these force particles and matter particles.

One of the fundamental ideas in particle theory is that matter particles interact by exchanging force particles, and mathematically the way that works is that in these gauge group structures you have two different types of crystallographic structure, you have the matter c.s and the force c.s, and in the case of SU(4) the matter crystallographic structures are like tetrathedra, you have two tetrahedra making a cube and those exactly correspond to the eigen values of the quarks and anti-quarks, and the electrons and the neutrinos. OK. So those are all matter particles, but then there are actually 15 force particles involved because SU4 is a 15 dimensional group but 3 of the force particles have zero eigen values, and 12 of them have none zero eigen values and those eigen values exactly correspond to the vertices of what Bucky fuller calls the 'vector equilibrium'. So that object is being used but in a totally different way to what he thought of it.

Fly Agaric: yeah.

NOTES AND QUOTES:

"In 1936 Coxeter moved to the University of Toronto, becoming a professor in 1948. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1948 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1950. He met Maurits Escher and his work on geometric figures helped inspire some of Escher's works, particularly the Circle Limit series based on hyperbolic tessellations. He also inspired some of the innovations of Buckminster Fuller. --http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coxeter

The search for a unifying theory was interrupted by the discovery of the strong and weak nuclear forces, which could not be subsumed into either gravity or electromagnetism. A further hurdle was the acceptance that quantum mechanics had to be incorporated from the start, rather than emerging as a consequence of a deterministic unified theory, as Einstein had hoped. Gravity and electromagnetism could always peacefully coexist as entries in a list of Newtonian forces, but for many years it seemed that gravity could not even be incorporated into the quantum framework, let alone unified with the other fundamental forces. For this reason, work on unification for much of the twentieth century, focused on understanding the three "quantum" forces: electromagnetism and the weak and strong forces. The first two were unified in 1967–68 by Sheldon Glashow, Steven Weinberg, and Abdus Salam as the "electroweak" force.[7] However, while the strong and electroweak forces peacefully coexist in the Standard Model of particle physics, they remain distinct. Several Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) have been proposed to unify them. Although the simplest GUTs have been experimentally ruled out, the general idea, especially when linked with supersymmetry, remains strongly favored by the theoretical physics community

In current mainstream physics, a Theory of Everything would unify all the fundamental interactions of nature, which are usually considered to be four in number: gravity, the strong nuclear force, the weak nuclear force, and the electromagnetic force. Because the weak force can transform elementary particles from one kind into another, the TOE should yield a deep understanding of the various different kinds of particles as well as the different forces. The expected pattern of theories is:

Theory of Everything

Gravity

Electronuclear force (GUT)

Strong force
SU(3)

Electroweak force
SU(2) x U(1)

Weak force
SU(2)

Electromagnetism
U(1)

Electric force

Magnetic force

In addition to the forces listed here, modern cosmology might require an inflationary force, dark energy, and also dark matter composed of fundamental particles outside the scheme of the standard model. The existence of these has not been proven and there are alternative theories such as modified Newtonian dynamics.
